I am not exaggerating when I tell you that literal sparkles form in my eyes. I become overwhelmed by the close to heavenliness of it. In those few moments complete bliss just…happens.
Eating ice cream. It’s a weakness of mine but it is also the strongest proof that I should have been a food critic.
The perfect flavor of ice cream is useless without the perfect texture of ice cream. I will not eat my favorite flavor unless it’s form and texture meet my standards.
But when you get the perfect combination of flavor and texture…all is right in the world. If you know me and have ever enjoyed an ice cream date alongside me, you understand my intense passion for it.
Most people would dread the morning routine entailed in my household. A dog, a rabbit, numerous hedgehogs, and chickens…the work involved prior to heading off to “work” is quite time consuming. Years ago I would have rolled my eyes each morning knowing the rushed routine ahead of me. These days, I delight in it.
There is something about morning dew splashing onto my flip flopped feet as I make the trek to the chicken pen. There is something about hearing the chatter of four feathered cuties behind a closed coop door telling each other it’s time to head out for a morning forage. As Moses makes his rounds around the yard, feeding, cleaning, watering, and making my own rounds in the yard occur.
In the midst of the hastiness, I tend to slow down and admire the new blooms on the flowers heaped throughout the yard. I give a slight “yay” when I see the new strawberry that has grown. I stare at the gourd plant that grew another inch overnight and is wrapping its new growth around the wire of the chicken pen. There is something satisfying about tending to the responsibilities that go along with having furry, feathered, and prickled pals.
Delight. Yes. The ice cream, the mini farm, the nature…these are all things in which I take delight. The completed painting that follows a few hundred strokes of the paintbrush. The extreme and loud laughter that rings out when the entire family is together, and the dimple that forms on only one cheek when my precious daughter smiles… These are things in which I take delight.
Merriam-Webster defines delight as “a strong feeling of happiness : great pleasure or satisfaction or something that makes you very happy.”
My definition? Getting lost in something that brings you so much joy. My mom’s indirect definition? It’s a strawberry milkshake that makes you daydream.
We have many things that bring us happiness and some things that bring us absolute delight.
What brings you delight? What puts the twinkle in your eye and the hop in your step?
Psalm 37:4 says “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
So what does it mean to delight in the Lord?
When we find true peace in Him. When we find fulfillment in Him. Our satisfaction and worth will come from Him when He is our delight.
There is a promise that attaches itself to taking delight in the Lord. Scripture says He will give us the desires of our hearts. That must mean you will finally get that boat… Or that record deal!
Nope. Well, not unless that is the desire of His heart, as well.
It is when we truly “delight” in the eternal things of God, our desires will begin to look like His and we will never go unfulfilled. In fact, when we delight ourselves in the Lord and in His will, God will place desires in our hearts. He then goes about fulfilling those desires.
So that mint chocolate chip ice cream…that masterpiece painting…that gourd that has reached the top of the pen… Even the dimple that forms with laughter…Nothing except the delight we find in our Savior will fulfill us.
Ice cream will fill. Christ will fulfill. There is your new T-shirt.
