This is not a hen. She looks like a hen. She lays eggs like a hen. But I have a hunch she is a dog…or a person.

She comes when she is called. She begs for food…human food. She jumps into our lap. She snuggles under our arms. She has been known to fly into our arms out of jealousy as we hold a fellow chicken.

What is possibly the most striking about Gertrude is not her dog-like obedience and snuggles, but it is her human-like impatience.

She will whine if we walk past the pen without opening it. She will even whine if we walk past the pen without talking to her. Her whine is not hen-like but, rather, sounds like a begging toddler in a toy store. If we hold food in our hands, she will jump to retrieve it rather than wait for us to place it in her dish. She impatiently begs and whines as we sit down until we make our lap available to her. Whining, snuggling, begging, obedience, impatience…

Yes, she is either dog or human. I have not decided thus far.

God is getting something ready in your life. How do I know? Waiting.

We all have to wait. Life is full of waiting and it begins from the time we take our first breath. We cried while we waited to be fed as babies. And we cry as we wait for things as adults.

We wait in lines, at stoplights and in waiting rooms. We wait for mail, for good news and for answers.

We wait on the Lord when we lift up prayers and we wait when answers don’t seem to come. I have prayers I’ve been praying for several months and some I’ve been praying for 15 years. And if you know me well you know I am the most impatient person you will ever meet.

Waiting is not my game. But God sure does make sure I’m not sitting on the bench during this one. Even today I have asked God yet again “why can’t I hear you answering me? Why are you so quiet? Why hasn’t this (fill in the blank) come to pass?”

Finally, I stopped long enough to listen to what He was screaming at me the whole time… “I’m getting it ready”. And with the history I have with Him I have a hunch it’s going to look way better than I ever dreamed.

My prayer is that you claim this in your life. Be relieved that He usually answers prayers differently than you thought they should be answered. And as you wait, get ready.

Isaiah 30:18 “Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!”
