If you are a parent you probably remember the “breathing test”. The middle of the night trek to the nursery to make sure your new born was still breathing. For those silent sleepers it required a gentle hand on the chest to feel the rise and fall or a finger under the nose to make sure air was indeed being exhaled.
Well, I have a confession. That newborn breathing test… still occurs most nights in my house. Usually more than once. I don’t consider myself an overly protective mom. But, yes, my 14 year old still gets the under the nose exhale assessment and the rise and fall of the chest evaluation. A maternal habit I don’t see being broken until she goes away to college. And then… I will have to figure something else out.
Isn’t it a relief to know that our Father, “Abba”, our Daddy, administers the ultimate “breathing test” on His children at every moment. He protects, watches, and guards us as we sleep, as we arise, as we eat, as we drive, as we succeed, as we fail, as we laugh, cry, as we turn left when we should have turned right… And through every circumstance, trial… The list goes on.
Security is something EVERY earthly child should feel and possess. The children of God should too. There’s a reason scripture mentions words like protect, watch, guard, direct, guide and Jealous God countless times. He wants us to securely rest in Him at ALL times and know He is in control. At all watches of the night our Father watches over us.
“He will not let your foot slip- he who watches over you will not slumber, indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
